The Diary Room (DR) is the room off the main house where houseguests talk one-on-one with production. It serves two masters at once: it’s where the show’s narration comes from, and it’s the only place in the house where a houseguest can speak to Big Brother directly. Every confessional you see on the CBS episodes — the strategy explanations, the jokes, the crying — was recorded in this room, usually within hours of the events it describes.
Sessions run throughout the day with no set schedule. Production calls houseguests in over the intercom, typically after the action from a competition, ceremony, or blowup has died down, because turning around three episodes a week means gathering interview bites around the clock. Sessions can run a few minutes or more than half an hour. A houseguest can also ask to go to the DR, but a producer can say no. The DR is also where eviction votes are cast on live Thursday nights, where goodbye messages are recorded, and where houseguests are pulled when they break house rules. The room even has a door to the outside world: expelled houseguests, voluntary exits, and medical removals all leave through the Diary Room.

Why there are two Diary Rooms now?
For most of the show’s history there was one DR. A second was added ahead of Celebrity Big Brother 2 in early 2019, and the reason was purely logistical: the celebrity seasons air more episodes on a compressed schedule, and one room couldn’t process interviews fast enough. Production designer Scott Storey converted an old emergency exit near the gym hallway into the second room. The original downstairs DR is the larger of the two with a built physical backdrop; the upstairs room is a tight squeeze and has been used with green screen so the background can be swapped out. Both rooms have stayed in use since, which is why feedsters sometimes see two houseguests disappear for sessions at the same time.
You are not allowed to talk about your Diary Room sessions?
It’s one of the most famous announcements in the house: houseguests, you are not allowed to talk about your Diary Room sessions with other houseguests. DR confidentiality is a formal rule, and the live feeds cut away the moment houseguests start comparing notes about what they were asked.
Production has practical reasons for the rule. DR sessions are where the show’s story is assembled, and if houseguests compared questions, they could reverse-engineer what production is interested in — which can telegraph twists, tip off targets, and reveal how each player is being portrayed. A houseguest who learns production keeps asking everyone about a brewing backdoor plan has effectively been handed a spoiler about their own game. The rule also protects the show’s on-air illusion that confessionals are spontaneous private thoughts rather than produced interviews.
The code words
Because the feeds cut whenever the DR comes up, houseguests invent euphemisms to talk around it — and every season develops its own private slang for the room and the people behind it. The generic versions show up year after year: vague references to “them,” “upstairs,” or “the people,” a silent point at a camera or a wall, and framing a session as going to talk to “my therapist” or “my psychologist.” The bit rarely works for long; feedsters learn each cast’s code words within days, and production usually catches on and cuts the feeds anyway, which is itself the confirmation.

Production manipulation in the Diary Room
The DR is the center of the longest-running argument in Big Brother fandom: how much does production shape the game from inside that room? Some of it isn’t even disputed, because the mechanics are documented. Houseguests are shown footage of competitions and conversations to refresh their memories before answering. They’re coached to speak up and bring energy. They’re allowed — and encouraged — to redo a line until it lands better. Producers ask leading questions built around hot topics in the house, and the answers become the episode’s narration.
The most revealing detail from the BB10 leak below wasn’t any question — it was that houseguests answer in full sentences that restate the question, so editors can drop the line into an episode with no interviewer ever heard. Once you notice it, you can’t unhear it: every DR confessional is built to be cut. None of that is a scandal; it’s how an unscripted show gets watchable television out of tired people in a fishbowl.
The sharper accusations come from the houseguests themselves. The most detailed on record is Christine from BB16, who said in 2020 that her DR sessions were 100% production-written by around week five — that she was made to say sentences verbatim, had to start over if she got a single word wrong, and sometimes sat in there for hours. She also said the leading questions worked in reverse: production kept asking her about Derrick and Cody, which is how she knew they were coming for her weeks before it happened. She went further, claiming production picks favorites and feeds them game information. Production has always denied steering the game, and the honest summary remains that the line between “getting a usable soundbite” and “influencing a decision” is invisible from outside the room — which is exactly why the debate never dies.

Diary Room leaks
DR sessions are never shown on the live feeds, but the control room occasionally flips the wrong switch. Those accidents are the only unfiltered look fans have ever gotten.
In Big Brother 10, more than twenty minutes of Michelle’s raw session leaked. It showed the producer-interview process in full — the flirty rapport-building before the questions start, the producer tidying her appearance for camera, and the fishing for usable soundbites.
In Big Brother 12, the house itself caught a bleed. Brendon told Enzo everyone heard him in the DR saying “I’m gonna kill those mother——” — then admitted he was mostly winding him up, though they really had heard something.
In Big Brother 14, DR audio broadcast into the house for real. Houseguests heard a producer say “so, it’s the Silent Six” during Dan’s session, outing his secret alliance and his role in Janelle’s backdoor days before the vote. Boogie complained on the feeds about production “blasting the DR sessions,” and CBS had to respond — a co-executive producer called it human error and denied any manipulation. It remains the only DR leak production ever formally answered for.
In Big Brother 17, a 3:35am leak caught James apparently receiving an America’s Player card — a twist reveal straight from the DR.
And in Big Brother 20, at 2:37am on the night Tyler won HOH, the feeds caught production asking him point-blank who his nominations would be — “Probably Haleigh and Scottie” — before any ceremony.
Each accident confirmed the same thing: the DR conversation is a two-way production interview, not a houseguest talking to an empty room.
The Canadian feeds sprang the same leaks — and we caught them ourselves. On the very first nomination morning of Big Brother Canada, the feeds briefly cut into Jillian’s Diary Room session as she talked through her nominations, and our capture of the leak is still in the archive. A season later, BBCAN2 let a quick DR leak slip of a completely exhausted Adel — minutes before he tried to sleep inside a kitchen cupboard, then bounced back out of the Diary Room announcing he’d got his second wind and Canada needed to wake up.

The doctor and the psychologist
The Diary Room is also the house’s medical gateway. If a houseguest needs an aspirin, a checkup, or stitches, they’re called to the DR, and anything more serious means leaving through the DR’s exterior door — the route used for every temporary medical removal in the show’s history. Former houseguests have also described regular check-ins with a psychologist during the season, arranged through the DR, as part of production’s duty of care in a game built on isolation and paranoia. Like everything else about the room, none of it airs: a houseguest disappears for a while, the feeds show nothing, and the house speculates.
The DR count game
Fans have turned the Diary Room into a spoiler tool of its own. Because the feeds show who gets called in and how long they’re gone, dedicated feed watchers keep counts of sessions per houseguest — and season after season, the players with the heaviest DR traffic turn out to be the ones production is building the story around. A quiet houseguest suddenly getting called in constantly is one of the oldest edit tells there is.
I have been disgusted with the constant use of fuck, fucking, mother fucking and so on. We counted over 320 one night on BB after dark. Why doesn’t someone stop this. Paul is the worst of all.I am not a prude but please enough is enough. This is downright disgusting. The sentence might go like this. I am fucking hungry, will make a fucking sandwich with some fucking butter and fucking cheese and then fucking eat it. I am not exaggerating here.
I really think Paul’s mouth and a few other house guest is uncalled for.
Paul is a,dirt bag. He even flips off production when asked to put mic on. I think BB wrote his name on the check coming into this game. They don’t say a word to him
Paul is a person of questionable character. He has been emboldened this season because of his retread status. I hate when these shows (BB, TAR, and S) bring back players from the past. He lost, rightly so, his first time. This season he is more determined to win. Cody had the right idea and seemingly the perfect timing to rid the house of the jerk through the back door. He even seemed to have some support for the idea from others. I suspect that the jerk’s contract for repeating included some number of free pass weeks. (Notice how quickly the good temps ended; makes me wonder) Once his free pass was exposed, he began using fascist tactics on the others to vilify Cody and anyone that was friendly/sympathetic to him. His own comments reveal that he has absolutely no loyalty to anyone else in the house. He will go after each and everyone, including those that aided and abetted in his reign of terror. He does this all while claiming to be innocent of any targetting and/or dirty tricks. Any doubts? He exposed himself on the last BB episode when he instructed Josh to take to level 30. My only hope is that some brave soul wins HOH and back doors him out, soon.
It is apparent Paul knows how to sway the majority. Most likable are Kevin, Jason, Mark and Alex.
Jessica, Cody and Elena are just too obnoxiously arrogant and superficial to stomache; Josh is simply a dillusional man/child, while Matt and Raven are just two weird, phoneys in a phoney showmance always hamming it up for the cameras.
I would want to see Kevin or Alex win.
I agree with wanting Kevin to win too! Alex talks way too fast but she’s real. I can’t wait for Elana to go home!
I watch Big Brother ever season in this season I really feel like Jessica and Cody have really been bullied Josh and some of the players they went Way Beyond what they should have said and done while playing the game especially making remarks about Cody as a marine when he served his country and especially when Jessica was competing in her father Adan and Josh was on the sidelines making mean remarks production should try to explain that the game is to be played certain way and all of the viciousness and bullying week after week of Jessica and Cody especially Jessica is really bad takes away from the game
I watch Big Brother ever season and there’s been some rough seas and that this season I’ve been surprised at how much production has let Cody and Jessica be actually being bullied and tortured when Jessica was doing so good in the game they should have stopped that it wasn’t fair especially when she was doing a competition and Josh and them on the sidelines were laughing at her and making bad comments she didn’t really get to compete fairly and comments about Cody service to the country about him being a marine are totally uncalled for they have consistently every week just hammered a Jessica when she actually was playing the game very well and that’s what I like to see is when the games being played good so it’s at for me it’s been a bad season
its not fair to say you want our feed back .but cant say whats really going on.christmas should not even be in the house. not playing.BY BY also she hangs on a married man .no self worth .PAUL should go get his mouth washed out. he looks like Charles manson. maby that’s why he acts like the pied piper. bib brother has went from a fun game to tourture. filthy f word 24/7 I will never watch it again no rules in the bb house . all the ywant is ratings , really surprised juli chen is hooked up in this kind of mess.
DONT ASK OUR OPINIONS IF YOU DONT WANT THEM.
Christmas should never have been able to stay in the game. When she got hurt BB should have taken her out and allow her to play another season. Way to much of the F word ..!!
Christmas should never have been able to stay in the game. When she got hurt BB should have pulled her and allow her to play another game. Worse players to date, all afraid to make a move or play the game. Don’t like bringing x players back, they had their chance..

Watch bb every year. This is the worst so far.Paul should not have been brought back. It is amazing how bb managed to find so many gullible people this year. It is hard to watch”stupid” play out 3 times a week.
