Big Brother 7 Pressure Cooker

Big Brother Pressure Cooker

The Pressure Cooker is a Big Brother endurance competition in which houseguests stand in a sealed box, each holding a button down, and the last one still holding wins Head of Household. It has been played twice in the American series — Big Brother 6 in 2005 and Big Brother 25 in 2023 — and the original is the longest competition in the show’s history, running close to fourteen hours.

  • First played: Big Brother 6, Week 6 Head of Household, overnight 11–12 August 2005.
  • Original winner: Jennifer, after roughly 13 hours 53 minutes.
  • Played again: Big Brother 25, Week 4, 24 August 2023. Cameron won, in about 13 hours 49 minutes.
  • The rule that makes it cruel: you can only leave the box in groups of three.
  • Longest competition in Big Brother history: yes, and nothing has come close since.
  • Times played in 26 seasons: two.

What is the Pressure Cooker in Big Brother?

The Pressure Cooker is the purest competition Big Brother has ever run. Everyone stands in a box holding a button. Nobody sits, nobody kneels. Lift your hand and you are out. The last person holding wins.

There is no puzzle in it, nothing physical, nothing to memorise. It measures one thing, which is how badly you want it, and that is exactly why it is the competition fans have spent twenty years asking to see again.

The outgoing Head of Household does not play, which is why the field is always one short.

How does the Pressure Cooker work?

The Pressure Cooker’s rules are short, and one of them does most of the damage.

  • Hand on the button, standing. No sitting, no kneeling, no leaning on it.
  • You can only leave in groups of three. Give up first and you do not get to walk out — you stand in the box with no button and nothing to win, waiting for two other people to break.
  • Boxes of temptation. Prizes and punishments, opened as players drop. They exist to make quitting look attractive at the exact moment it is hardest to resist.
  • Production interferes. Lights and music in 2005; in 2023 the show added smells, temperature and noise.

The groups-of-three rule is what turns an endurance competition into a psychological one. It means your suffering does not end when you surrender — you simply move from competing to watching, still on your feet, with nothing left to play for.

What happened in the original Pressure Cooker?

The original Pressure Cooker ran overnight on 11–12 August 2005, Days 40 into 41 of Big Brother 6, and it is still the longest competition the show has produced.

It began on one of the most loaded nights of that season. Sarah had just been evicted 6–1, and Kaysar had re-entered the house that same night, voted back in by America with 82% of the vote. He walked out of one door and into the box.

Eight played: Jennifer, Kaysar, April, Beau, Ivette, Maggie, Janelle and Rachel. Howie sat it out as outgoing Head of Household.

Four hours in, feed watchers reported that nobody was out, nobody had needed the bathroom, and no more boxes had been opened. It was still running when the sun came up. By morning the house was treating Jennifer, who was still standing, as though she had survived a car crash.

The boxes did their work along the way — among them a cocktail bar, which went to Beau.

Why is the Pressure Cooker remembered as a betrayal?

Because of how the Pressure Cooker ended, and what Jennifer did with the power afterwards.

It came down to Kaysar and Jennifer. He had been back in the house for a matter of hours. She offered him a deal — step down, and she would not come after him. He took his hand off the button.

She nominated Janelle and Rachel. Rachel won the Power of Veto and took herself off. And with a replacement nomination to make, Jennifer put up Kaysar — the backdoor her alliance had wanted all along. The house voted him out.

Days earlier, the audience had voted him back into the game with 82%. He lasted a week. That is the part people remember, and it is why the Pressure Cooker is spoken about as a turning point rather than a statistic.

What happened when it returned in Big Brother 25?

Eighteen years later, the Pressure Cooker came back on 24 August 2023, as the Week 4 Head of Household in Big Brother 25, dressed up in that season’s Scaryverse theme.

Cameron won it, in roughly 13 hours 49 minutes — about four minutes short of the record, which is a remarkable way to lose a record. America finished second and Mecole third. Jared went out first and Cirie second. Cameron nominated Blue and Jag with the Head of Household he had just stood all night for.

The 2023 version was harsher than the original. Production added smells, temperature changes and noise on top of the lights and music of 2005, and the cards handed out during the competition did everything from playing music at the players to freeing them in threes.

The line of the night belonged to America, who said she was not going to get Kaysar’d. Eighteen years on, in a house where nobody playing had been old enough to watch it live, the reference needed no explanation.

Did the Pressure Cooker start in Big Brother 5?

There is a genuine argument about this, and the honest answer to whether the Pressure Cooker began in Big Brother 5 is that it depends what you count.

Big Brother 5, in 2004, ran a competition called “I Have A Secret” in which players held buttons over cutouts of themselves. Diane won it and it lasted around nine and a half hours. Same idea, different name.

What is clear is that the name belongs to Big Brother 6, and that when the show brought it back in 2023 it pointed at 2005 and at Kaysar, not at 2004. Treat Big Brother 5 as the ancestor and Big Brother 6 as the original, which is roughly where most of the fanbase has landed.

Is the Pressure Cooker the longest Big Brother competition?

Yes. Nothing in the American series has been documented as running longer than the Big Brother 6 Pressure Cooker, and the gap to everything else is wide.

  • BB6 Pressure Cooker — about 13 hours 53 minutes.
  • BB25 Pressure Cooker — about 13 hours 49 minutes.
  • BB26, Getting Toasted — about 9 hours 45 minutes.
  • BB5, I Have A Secret — about 9 hours 32 minutes.

One note on the numbers. A figure of 14 hours 37 minutes circulates for the 2005 competition and is not well supported — Kaysar, who stood through the whole thing, has described it as nearly fourteen hours, which matches the shorter figure. If you see fourteen and a half hours quoted anywhere, treat it carefully.

Has the Pressure Cooker been played anywhere else?

Not in any other Big Brother the American audience is likely to have watched. There has been no Pressure Cooker in Big Brother Canada, Big Brother UK, Celebrity Big Brother, Big Brother: Over the Top or Reindeer Games.

The one exception is the Quebec version of Celebrity Big Brother, which ran a variant in its first season in 2021. Camille Felton won it.

Two outings in twenty-six American seasons is the whole record. For a competition this well loved, it has barely been used — which is most of why it still feels like an event.
