Big Brother 11 Casting Story, You Know What? F You Back, CBS. I Didn’t Want to Go on “Big Brother” Anyway.

We were fortunate enough to be in contact with Grace Koh who was a finalest for Big Brother 11. She has written about her experiences during the casting process and its quite a good read. Grace Gives some valuable insight about what it is like to go through the casting process. During the casting process she was able to see some of the houseguests but was told sternly to not interact with them. Grace is also working on a documentary called Operation Craiglist which sounds pretty cool…

“I responded to a random Craigslist casting ad for what sounded like a cool webisode project about geeks. Once they came back to me saying they wanted me to come in and interview for “Big Brother”, I was decidedly against it. Not only did I know virtually nothing about the show, my impression of it has always been that it’s sort of “white trash” …..ridiculously grueling process consisting of endless interviews, hours upon hours of psych testing, blood work, medical exams, government level background checks, hired agencies trying to contact/fuck with people from your past, scrutinizing scores of pages in terrifying contracts before signing themTV”

This is what she had to say about the Love Muscle aka “Cool GUY”

“My nickname for MMA dude was “Cool Guy” (as in, sarcastically mocking he thought he was “too cool” for the rest of us). He had a certain air and walk about him. He AWAYS wore these gross embroidered button downs (I think that’s maybe the fashion now?)…and he’d always have one side tucked in and the other flap hanging loose – I have no idea why. The casting people would crack up at my jokes of him.”

Lydia’s aka tattoo Girl

” “Tattoo girl’s nickname was difficult to pin down. The first day, she wore huge sunglasses that covered most of her face. I thought she might be half black? And since she had bleached blond hair, I was tempted to go with “Tatted Biney” (for albino). I went with “Glama” instead since she was extremely stylish and very cute. When I saw her the next day, she was all goth-ed out in cool black make-up and sans sunglasses. She looked a bit different with her face showing, and she looked half Asian? I ultimately settled on “Chameleon Glama”.” “

Quiet sweet Michelle aka “Casual Sweetie” who i swear is going to get freak nasty on us in August…. if she last that long. LOL too late last night Michelle got raunchy on us.

“”The Nueroscientist was very plain and sweet looking. I probably identified with her the most since I could tell that we were the “geeks” of the group. Even though CBS didn’t disclose the “clique” theme, you knew they were casting for specific personalities (specified in the casting ad). So I knew this girl was likely my main “competition”. But of the bunch, I liked her the best. (Well…as much as you can from silent observations.) She had a sweet and friendly smile. Even though she was sort of plain-jane, you could tell she was trying REALLY hard to get a bit fancied up for the interviews with some make-up and accessories. In the final interview, she read her book for most of the waiting period. I think I finally settled on “Casual Sweetie”.”

It’s so funny since I had no idea when the competition would start. I joked around with the casting producers who carted us around CBS Radford throughout the process. Upon inquiring when the game started, they facetiously answered, “NOW!” I knew they were kidding…but you never know with these things. I’ve heard that on these shows you need to pay attention to EVERYTHING…

So I began to (stealthily) study all the minor details of each contestant as we jointly waited in the lobbies. I had nicknames for each. I mentally noted how they were dressed, what colors/accessories/clothes they wore, brands of shoes/garments, physical characteristics, etc. Since I also write stand-up, I have a very sarcastic (and sort of mocking sense of humor). The casting folks got a huge kick out of this. (A few were chomping at the bit to hear my commentary in the diary room.) I would climb into the golf cart, and they’d wait in anticipation for me to debrief with my thoughts. The kicker was…before you entered any area whatsoever housing several of us, they very harshly warned – under NO circumstance were we allowed to speak or interact with any other contestant. Every once in awhile, you’d see us stealing glances or flash quick smiles…but that’s it.
