Big Brother 10 - Audition Process

source

“Not to change the subject or anything, but I auditioned for Big Brother 2nite here in Salt Lake City, Utah. And–without trying to sound cocky or presumptuous–I believe I did really well. They said that call backs would be made by this Monday.

I even made the evening news. Woohoo! They showed us standing in line for the auditions. Vicki, if you have Comcast, you can go to “Utah On Demand” and then “CBS news” at 6pm to see it.

Auditions were… from 4 to 8pm and I got my turn at 7pm. The lines were long–if I had to guess, I’d say there was about 250 people who auditioned.

If you are interested in hearing more details, let me know. I’ll write more tomorrow. Right now, I’m just tired as hell from the whole process and then being excited afterward and calling family and friends.

Just a bit of info before I call it a night–we were taken in 3 people at a time for the interview (I don’t understand why they call it “auditions”, it seemed more like an interview to me). There were 2 people doing the interviewing. The typical interview total lasted 15 minutes for all 3 people. For my group, it lasted 35 minutes and I did most of the talking.

Keeping my fingers crossed. Again, let me know if someone wants details.

I found out last night that Salt Lake City is Region #7. Apparently, it changed from Denver last year. I had still thought it was Denver and that I’d have to fly there if I get a call back. Now, fortunately, I can stay in my own back yard!

Here are some details:

I showed up with a buddy at 4pm. Auditions were from 4-8. I had the thought to chicken out at first, but then I said “what the hell” and did it anyway. I actually didn’t get to audition/interview til 7pm, so I stood in line for 3 hours. Local news crews were there. I was fortunate enuff to have this group of people around me who were really cool. There was this young couple that I was impressed with. They woman was easy on the eyes, and both of them had great personalities. This other older guy who went in with me for the interview had driven to SLC from Wyoming. He was cool. This one 21yr old girl, in particular, was VERY cool and chatty and her and I struck up several conversations. She and I were talking quite a bit and people joined in and we were all laughing (I considered that there were BB “moles” in line watching for people who were interesting, so I was happy this girl and I were getting some attention). She reminded me of Natalie from this season’s BB, but less annoying, lol! One of her stories was that she has these recurring nightmares about earwigs going into her ears. !!!! Funny. You had to be there.

There were 2 older guys in line I spoke with. This 61yr old was annoying alot of people in line, particularly the women. This other older guy I chatted with told me that his daughter from back East had recommended the show to him. He had an interesting, quirky personality. He looked a little bit like Drew Carey, and was funny. He seemed to be probing me alot by asking all sorts of questions.

We each had a number and mine was #0303. When we got to the front of the line, they had us take pictures in groups of 3. I had learned earlier in the day that the interviews would be in groups of 3, too, and that there were 2 interviewers–a latin dude and this woman (both looked like they were in their mid to late 20s–not very old at all–and I unknowingly had spoken to the woman when I arrived).

I was disappointed to learn that one of the other 2 people I would be sharing the interview with was that crazy 61yr old! Grrr…but fortunately, the other person was the dude from Wyoming–and he and I had already chatted a bit and I knew he was cool.

The auditions/interviews were held at this place called Jason’s Deli at the Gateway mall in downtown SLC. Kinda strange, I thought, to have things conducted in a deli but then I realized it was a pleasant quiet environment–not very loud or distracting. Hell, I heard that the auditions last year was at a local sports bar in SLC called Lumpys. I’ve been to that bar and it gets LOUD, LOL! I would have gone last year, if I had known it was in SLC. Wasn’t Crazy James found in a bar?

I gotta take this phone call…I’ll break this email into 2 parts. Sorry it’s so lengthy, you guys. I can be too detailed for my own good! Be right back.

Oh…someone asked. Before I forget to answer, my first name is Lawrence.

Ok…now the actual auditions.

The 61yr old crazy guy, the Wyoming dude, and I went into the deli for our interviews. Our turn fell into the lap of the 20-something woman, which I was content with–considering I had spoken to her earlier. She even made a comment saying that she remembered me.

We sat down in a booth in a corner and she introduced herself (I can’t remember her name for the LIFE of me!). She asked us to introduce ourselves and our full names. Then she asked us to talk about ourselves and tell her something interesting and why we thought we should be on the show. Wyoming dude started first, and I remember hearing him talk about some life or death experience he had. I was lost in my thoughts and didn’t hear the full story.

When it was my turn, I introduced myself and told her I have been a BB fan since season 3. That I felt that CBS was looking for unique people and that I was one of those people. I asked her what most people thought of when someone mentioned Utah, and she laughed and said that she thought of Utahns as being Mormon and white.

Obviously, I didn’t fit that role–being hispanic and Catholic–and that was one of the points I wanted to illustrate. She asked about my background and I talked about a variety of things: born and raised in Utah, moved to California when I was 17, went to a private college in Northern Cali. Experienced different living experiences and cultures, from the Utah culture to finishing high school in Oakland, CA, to going to a Richie-Rich college.

All through this, I was focusing on articulating and enunciating myself clearly and making eye contact and smiling. Again, that group of people standing in line with me helped me to relax. Hell, talking about BB with other fans would make any of us relax!

In the BB house, I said to her, a person will go far in the game by knowing how to “balance” things. I told her that I’d do well in the game bcuz balance has been a key motto in my life.

Oh hell…I gotta stop here…

L.T.”
